Eggs Eggs Eggs!!!

Codfish Island is a busy place these days with around 20 people being here at any one time, including all of the kakapo team and lots of wonderful volunteers.  Since the first mating between Lisa and Basil three weeks ago there have been a total of 11 matings.

Things seem to have slowed down a bit now with no matings for two weeks, however the females are still going on some big mission walks all over the island.  Dr. Juan came all the way from Spain to continue collecting sperm and working towards artificial insemination of females in the future.  The biggest surprise of the season so far has been that two six year old females have mated - they are stars!!!!!!  Previously the youngest-known female to mate was 9 years old.  At present we have five nests on the go including the two young girls - Aparima and Rakiura - as well as Lisa, Sue and Cyndy.
