Mokopuna dies

Hand-raising kakapo chicks requires so much effort and dedication from everyone on the team and we do all that we can to increase the chance of survival.  So you can imagine the devastation when, after a week of illness, we lost our oldest chick "Mokopuna".

Firstly her weight started to plateau, and then she became lethargic and resistant to feeding.  The attention of vets and experts, and loads of time and energy from the team tending to her and administering medication didn't prevent her death.  It would appear that she died from an infection in her lung - something that would have killed her much sooner in the wild.
We're very sad because we've been witnesses from the start; of Rakiura mating and then making her nest to lay the egg that was to hatch and be Mokopuna.  The name means "grandchild", and thus she was - of old "Bill" who passed away suddenly in March.
